Peer-to-peer luxury · Launching in Ireland

Rent the icon.
Own the moment.

The world's most coveted handbags — Chanel, Dior, Hermès, Gucci, Louis Vuitton — rented for a few days from verified owners near you. Owners earn from the bags resting in their wardrobe. You carry the dream without the €8,000 price tag.

The opportunity

A wardrobe of icons, sitting idle.

Luxury handbags are among the best-performing physical assets on earth — a Birkin has outperformed the S&P 500 over two decades. Yet most spend their life in a dust bag on a shelf.

Meanwhile a generation raised on access over ownership wants the bag for the wedding, the interview, the trip, the photo — not forever. Lend Luxe connects the two. Owners monetise a dormant asset; renters get the icon for a fraction of retail; we take a clean, transparent margin and guarantee the trust layer that makes strangers comfortable shipping €8,000 objects to each other.

Owner sets the rate she wants to receive€75/day
Lend Luxe margin (10%, configurable)+ €7.50
Subtotal€82.50
Rounded up — the price renters see€83/day

The owner always receives exactly her set rate. Our margin and rounding rule (nearest €1 / €5) are both controlled from the admin panel — no code change to run a promo or change a market's pricing.

How it works

Two sides. One trusted exchange.

We sit in the middle as the trust, payments and logistics layer — never touching the bag, always guaranteeing the deal.

For the renter

Discover

Search by brand, model, size, colour, price-per-day and location on a live map. Filter to what's available on your dates.

Book

Pick dates on the owner's calendar — no double-booking, ever. Pay securely; a refundable deposit is pre-authorised, not charged.

Receive & carry

The bag ships insured & tracked with a tamper-evident seal and a condition report. Unbox, verify, enjoy.

Return

Ship back with the prepaid label by the due date. Deposit released on a clean return. Rate each other.

For the owner

List

Upload at least one photo or video (we require it), add the story, serial & proof of authenticity. Set your daily rate.

Control availability

Block out dates on your calendar. Your bag is only rentable when you say so. Set min/max rental length.

Ship securely

Accept a request, print the insured label, seal the box, log the outbound condition photos. We handle the rest.

Get paid

Payout lands automatically after a clean return — minus nothing. You keep 100% of your set rate.

Product & features

Everything in your brief — and the parts you'll wish you'd asked for.

🔍

Smart search & filters

Free-text keywords (brand, model, size, colour) plus structured filters: price-per-day range, location radius, dates, condition, year. Typo-tolerant and instant.

🗺️

Map on every listing

Each bag shows an approximate map pin (exact address hidden until booking). Browse by area — perfect for local hand-off later.

📅

Owner availability calendar

Real-time calendar with hard locks against double-booking, buffer days for cleaning/shipping, and seasonal pricing.

🎬

Rich media listings

Multiple photos and video walk-arounds (min. one required). 360° and zoom on the roadmap. Video proves condition and authenticity.

💳

Escrow payments & payouts

Funds held in escrow until clean return. Automated owner payouts, refundable deposit holds, and built-in SCA for EU cards.

🛡️

Authentication & protection

Serial logging, expert/partner authentication, condition reports in & out, and a damage-protection plan baked into checkout.

Two-way reviews & trust score

Renters and owners rate each other. A trust score gates access to higher-value bags and unlocks instant-book.

💬

In-app messaging

Pre-booking questions, handover coordination and dispute threads — all logged, all auditable, never sharing personal contacts.

🌍

Multi-language & currency

English at launch; Arabic (RTL) and Spanish architected from day one. Locale-aware pricing, dates and currency.

📱

iOS, Android & web

One React Native codebase ships native apps and the responsive website — consistent experience, faster iteration.

🔔

Notifications & reminders

Push, email & SMS for booking requests, return-due nudges, late warnings and payout confirmations.

📊

Admin portal & dashboards

Manage users, listings, payments, disputes & KYC. Live reports on GMV, take-rate, utilisation, cohorts and fraud signals.

Trust & safety — the hard problem

What if the bag never comes back?

You named the four nightmares: non-return, damage, lateness, and counterfeits in either direction. This is the make-or-break of the whole business. Here's how we engineer the risk down to something insurable.

🚫 The renter never returns the bag

Theft / "lost in post" / ghosting after delivery.

  • Mandatory ID + KYC verification (Stripe Identity / Onfido) before any booking
  • Full security deposit pre-authorised on the card — up to the bag's declared value for high-tier items
  • Funds + deposit captured automatically if the bag is overdue past the grace window
  • Theft/non-return covered by the protection plan & partner insurance; we make the owner whole
  • Signed rental agreement = enforceable debt; Garda/police report + collections for recovery
  • Trust score & value caps: a first-time renter cannot book a €15k Birkin

💥 The bag comes back damaged

Stains, scratches, broken hardware, odour, water damage.

  • Timestamped, geotagged condition reports — photo/video at check-out and check-in
  • AI + human diff of "before vs after" images flags new damage automatically
  • Tiered damage fees scaled to severity, charged from the held deposit
  • Protection plan covers professional restoration (spa/repair partners)
  • Clear, published wear-vs-damage policy so disputes resolve on evidence, not opinion
  • Optional renter "damage waiver" add-on at checkout, like car rental

⏰ The renter returns it late

Blocks the next booking, frustrates the owner.

  • Automated reminders at T-2 days, due date, and overdue
  • Per-day late fees auto-charged from the deposit, escalating after a grace period
  • Calendar buffer days absorb shipping slack so the next renter isn't hit
  • Late returns hurt the renter's trust score and instant-book eligibility
  • After N overdue days the booking flips to "non-return" and insurance engages

🎭 Counterfeit — either direction

Renter swaps in a fake; or an owner advertised a "real" bag that isn't.

  • Authentication at onboarding: serial numbers, date codes, microscopic detail photos; partner (Entrupy/Real Authentication) or in-house expert for high value
  • Unique serialised tamper-evident seal/tag applied per rental — a swapped bag breaks the chain of custody
  • Outbound + inbound authentication checks on premium tiers (optional hub model)
  • Owners warrant authenticity contractually; selling/renting a fake is fraud we report
  • "Authenticity guaranteed" badge only on verified items; renter gets a full refund + we pursue the owner if a fake ships
  • Permanent, immutable evidence log per item (every photo, seal ID, handover) for disputes & chargebacks

Defence in depth — the trust stack

01

Identity

KYC/AML on both sides before money or bags move. Verified-only marketplace.

02

Authentication

Every listed bag verified real; serialised; high-value items physically checked.

03

Money

Escrow + refundable deposit pre-auth + protection fee. Nothing pays out until a clean return.

04

Chain of custody

Tamper-evident seals, insured/tracked shipping, condition reports in and out.

05

Insurance

Specialist policy backstops theft & major damage above the deposit. Owners are guaranteed whole.

06

Reputation & recourse

Two-way trust scores, value caps, dispute resolution, legal & collections for bad actors.

My honest read on the model: de-risk shipping with a hub.

Pure peer-to-peer shipping is the single biggest risk — you can't fully control authenticity or condition when bags fly directly between strangers. My strong recommendation: offer a "Lend Luxe Verified" hub option where the owner ships to us first. We authenticate, photograph, seal, store and re-ship — then reverse the flow on return. It costs more per transaction but it's the moat: it makes "received a fake" and "returned a fake" structurally near-impossible, and it's exactly how Vivrelle, Cocoon and the watch-rental players win trust. Start P2P-direct to launch cheaply, layer the hub in for high-value bags.

Technical architecture

One codebase, three platforms, EU-ready.

A pragmatic, fundable stack: ship fast with React Native everywhere, lean on Stripe Connect for the marketplace money problem, and keep data in the EU for GDPR.

Key decisions & why

  • Stripe Connect for the whole money problem. It gives us escrow-style delayed capture, marketplace payouts, refundable deposit holds (auth/capture), SCA, and PCI scope offload in one integration. This is the fastest path to a compliant marketplace.
  • PostGIS, not a bolt-on. "Bags within 20 km available next weekend under €100/day" is a geo + availability + price query. Doing it in Postgres keeps it consistent and cheap.
  • Booking locks in Redis + DB constraints. Double-booking is a correctness bug we cannot ship. Calendar holds use transactional locks and exclusion constraints, not optimistic UI.
  • Video-first media via a streaming provider. Owners must upload media; video is the best authenticity & condition proof, so we transcode & stream rather than dump raw files.
  • i18n & RTL from line one. Retrofitting Arabic RTL is painful. We externalise strings and test RTL early even though launch is English-only.
  • EU data residency. Launching in Ireland means the Irish DPC and GDPR. Data stays in an EU region; DSAR/erasure flows are first-class.
  • Append-only evidence log. Every condition photo, seal ID and status change is immutable — the backbone of winning disputes and card chargebacks.
  • Feature-flagged config. The 10% margin, rounding rule, deposit %, fees and value caps are runtime config, tunable per market without a deploy.
⚖️

Compliance

GDPR (Irish DPC), PCI-DSS via Stripe, PSD2/SCA, KYC/AML, consumer-rights & distance-selling rules, insurance regulation for the protection plan.

🧱

Challenges we're not hiding

Cold-start supply, fraud at scale, shipping logistics & loss, deposit UX friction, insurer appetite for P2P luxury, and seasonal demand spikes.

🚀

Scale path

Stateless services behind the gateway, read replicas, queue-based media/notifications, and per-market sharding as countries come online.

UI / UX proposal

Designed to feel like the boutique, not the bazaar.

Editorial, dark, gold-accented. The product has to feel as premium as a €10k bag or no one will trust it with theirs. Below are live, clickable screens — not pictures.

Go-to-market & growth

Win Dublin first. Make it look inevitable.

A two-sided marketplace lives or dies on solving the cold-start. We seed supply deliberately, then pour fuel on demand through the channels luxury fashion already lives in.

The launch playbook (Ireland)

01

Seed 50–100 hero bags

Hand-recruit Dublin owners & resellers; concierge-onboard, authenticate & photograph for them. Supply before demand.

02

Create scarcity & buzz

Invite-only waitlist, a launch event with stylists, and "the bag you can't buy, for the night you can't repeat."

03

Influencer engine

Gift rentals to Irish fashion creators; they post the unboxing & the look. Authentic content at near-zero CAC.

04

Occasion marketing

Target weddings, races (Galway, Punchestown), graduations, interviews, holidays — moments people pay to look the part.

Channels & messaging

📸 Instagram & TikTok

Unboxings, "rent vs retail" maths, styling reels. The product is inherently visual.

Primary demand engine

🤝 Stylist & event partners

Commission deals with wedding planners, photographers & stylists who need bags for clients.

B2B2C supply of demand

🔎 SEO & intent

"Rent a Chanel bag Dublin", "Birkin hire Ireland" — own the long tail before anyone else.

Compounding, low CAC

🎁 Referral & loyalty

Give €20, get €20. Owner referral bonuses. Tiered perks for repeat renters.

Figures are illustrative scaffolding for the demo. My honest note: a single 10% renter-side margin is thin once you fund insurance, fraud & CAC — layer the protection fee and an owner-side commission to make the economics work.

My honest opinion

The good, the hard, and the "you're not first."

Why this can win

  • Real, growing demand: access-over-ownership + a $79B resale/rental wave.
  • Owners have a genuine, idle, appreciating asset — supply has real incentive.
  • Ireland is a smart, contained, English-speaking, high-income beachhead with weak local competition.
  • Bag-specialist focus beats generic "rent any clothing" players on trust & SEO.
  • The trust layer, once built, is a defensible moat competitors can't copy overnight.

Where I'll push back

  • ! You're not first to rent bags in Ireland. Luxe Library, MÁLA Hire, Rent & Renew (Designer Exchange) & Circular Style already do — and By Rotation, Cocoon & HURR cover the UK. The honest gap is the model, not the idea (see the map below).
  • ! Trust & fraud are existential, not a feature. Budget for it like a payments company.
  • ! Insurer appetite for P2P luxury shipping is uncertain — line this up before launch, not after.
  • ! 10% alone is thin. Stack protection + owner commission or the maths won't fund CAC.
  • ! Cold-start supply is the real first job — solve owners before renters.

The real competitive landscape

Four rivals already rent bags in Ireland — but no one owns your square.

Every Irish player buys its own stock (capital-heavy). Every peer-to-peer player is UK-based and mixes bags with clothing. The intersection — peer-to-peer, bag-specialist, Ireland-native — is empty.

Verified June 2026. Most rivals don't publish prices publicly. Read of the field: the Irish incumbents prove demand exists and bags clear authentication locally — but their capital-heavy, single-buyer supply is exactly what an owner marketplace out-scales.

Extra features I'd add to win

Subscription tier

"A new icon every month" — predictable revenue & the Cocoon/Vivrelle model, on top of one-off rentals.

Rent-to-own

Apply accumulated rental fees toward buying the bag. Converts love into a sale; new revenue line.

Stylist / event mode

Multi-bag bookings & concierge for weddings, shoots and influencers — higher AOV, B2B.

Try-on AR

See the bag to scale on your shoulder before booking — reduces returns & disappointment.

Resale crossover

"Rented & loved? Buy it." Bridge to the resale market owners already use.

Owner insurance vault

Free authentication + insured storage as a hook to win premium supply from resellers.
